Ferrous sulfate, molecular formula FeSO4·7H2O (heptahydrate), FeSO4·nH2O (dry product). Heptahydrate ferrous sulfate is gray or blue-green granular crystals, odorless, slightly salty, with a tint, solubility of 68g/100mL, easy to weather in dry air, gradually oxidized in humid air to form yellow-brown alkaline ferric sulfate.
Dry ferrous sulfate is gray or light green powder, solubility of 32g/100mL, and turns blue-green with water. Ferrous sulfate has a low cost and is a good inorganic iron source.
In the food industry, ferrous sulfate can be used as an iron nutrient enhancer to enhance various foods, such as rice and its products, wheat flour and its products, formula milk, soy flour, etc.
Ferrous sulfate is an essential iron compound commonly used in food fortification and as a dietary supplement to treat iron-deficiency anemia. The food grade ferrous sulfate is a highly purified form of this compound, designed specifically for use in foods, beverages, and supplements. It serves as a bioavailable iron source, meaning the body can efficiently absorb and utilize the iron it provides, making it a popular choice for boosting nutritional iron intake.

1. High Purity:
• Food grade ferrous sulfate is produced under stringent conditions to ensure high levels of purity and safety for human consumption. It contains minimal contaminants such as heavy metals and other impurities, making it suitable for fortifying food products.
2. Water Solubility:
• One of the key characteristics of ferrous sulfate is its high solubility in water, which makes it an excellent choice for use in liquid formulations such as iron-fortified beverages, juices, and nutritional drinks.
3. Greenish Appearance:
• The heptahydrate form of ferrous sulfate typically appears as pale green or bluish-green crystals, while the anhydrous form appears as a white to grayish powder. This crystalline form ensures ease of handling and accurate dosing in manufacturing processes.
4. High Bioavailability:
• Ferrous sulfate is a bioavailable iron source, meaning it is readily absorbed by the human body. This makes it an ideal choice for iron supplementation, as it can efficiently increase iron levels in individuals with iron deficiency.
5. Stable in Various Formulations:
• Ferrous sulfate remains stable in both solid and liquid formulations, ensuring that the iron content remains effective throughout the product’s shelf life.
1. As an iron nutritional fortifier, it is widely used in various foods.
2. Ferrous sulfate is recommended first in the guidelines for iron fortifiers for cereal-based staple foods.
3. Ferrous sulfate can be used to fortify whole milk powder and infant formula, but cannot be used to fortify liquid dairy products.
1. Food Fortification:
• Ferrous sulfate is commonly used to fortify foods such as flours, breakfast cereals, breads, and pasta. Iron fortification in food products is essential for addressing iron deficiencies in populations where anemia is prevalent, especially in children, pregnant women, and the elderly.
2. Iron Supplements:
• Ferrous sulfate supplements are widely available in various forms, including tablets, capsules, and powders. These supplements are used to prevent or treat iron-deficiency anemia, a condition that can cause fatigue, weakness, and impaired cognitive function due to low levels of iron in the body.
3. Beverage Fortification:
• Due to its water solubility, ferrous sulfate is ideal for use in fortified beverages, such as juices, energy drinks, and nutritional shakes. It helps increase the iron content without affecting the flavor or texture of the beverage.
4. Animal Feed:
• Ferrous sulfate is also used in animal feed to prevent iron deficiencies in livestock and pets. Ensuring adequate iron intake in animals helps promote healthy growth, development, and overall well-being.
5. Pharmaceutical Industry:
• In the pharmaceutical industry, ferrous sulfate is a common ingredient in prescription iron supplements. It is used to treat patients suffering from iron deficiency due to chronic conditions, blood loss, or poor iron absorption.
